Kanya King CBE, the visionary founder of the Mobo (Music of Black Origin) Awards, has revealed her diagnosis of stage four bowel cancer. The influential media personality and activist shared the emotional news through an Instagram video, expressing determination and resilience despite the challenges ahead.
In her announcement, King urged her followers to trust their instincts and advocate for their health. “These things happen for a reason,” she said, while affirming her intent to overcome this diagnosis just as she has triumphed over past adversities.
Accompanying the video, King wrote: “Learning I have stage 4 bowel cancer was something I never saw coming. It’s a club I never wanted to join, and yet here I am, still processing this unexpected reality. This diagnosis has tested me in ways I never imagined, but it has also given me a renewed sense of purpose.”
She continued, emphasizing the importance of meaningful living: “Life isn’t just about how long you live; it’s about how deeply you live. I want to use my platform to shine a light on the importance of health equity and to empower others facing chronic illnesses to keep pushing forward. My faith remains my anchor, and I believe this chapter will be one of growth, resilience, and service.”
King’s legacy as the founder of the Mobo Awards, which she established in 1996, has been transformative for British music. The platform has elevated Black music and culture, pushing it from the fringes of British popular culture to the forefront of mainstream recognition.
